Sublingual piroxicam provides rapid pain relief for migraine attacks. This study found it significantly reduced pain and associated symptoms with excellent tolerability compared to placebo.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Migraine without aura is a common neurological condition causing significant pain.
- Effective acute management of migraine attacks is crucial for patient quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the analgesic efficacy of sublingual piroxicam versus placebo for acute migraine without aura.
Main Methods:
- A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
- 60 patients (18-50 years) with migraine without aura received either sublingual piroxicam (40 mg) or placebo.
- Pain intensity and associated symptoms were evaluated post-administration.
Main Results:
- Sublingual piroxicam significantly reduced pain intensity within 15 minutes (P < 0.05).
- Associated migraine symptoms resolved significantly with piroxicam.
- 83.3% of patients reported excellent to good response with piroxicam versus 10% with placebo.
- No adverse side effects were reported.
Conclusions:
- Sublingual piroxicam is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for acute migraine without aura.
- It offers rapid and significant pain relief.
- Piroxicam demonstrates superior efficacy compared to placebo in managing migraine attacks.
