The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries.   • Wilms Tumor 1 (WT1) is a zinc finger protein vital for kidney development in animal models.
  • Its specific role in human fetal kidney development remains largely uncharacterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression pattern of WT1 during human nephrogenesis.
  • To elucidate the role of WT1 in the development and maturation of human fetal kidneys.

Main Methods:

  • Kidney tissues from four human fetuses and two newborns were analyzed.
  • WT1 expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry.

Main Results:

  • WT1 immunoreactivity was detected in all examined fetal and newborn kidneys, except in the newborn at term.
  • Immunostaining was prominent in podocytes within glomeruli and subcapsular regions of active glomerulogenesis.
