Summary

Sclerotherapy, particularly foam sclerotherapy, is rarely linked to stroke. A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a key risk factor, but most patients recover fully.

  • Foam sclerotherapy was implicated in nine cases, often with paradoxical gas emboli.
  • Ten of 13 patients experienced complete recovery.
  • Conclusions:

    • Patients with PFO or a history of cryptogenic stroke/migraine with aura are at increased risk.
    • Preoperative screening for PFO and potential percutaneous closure may benefit high-risk individuals.
