Background:

Work ability is influenced by age and psychosocial hazards, but its link to work experience is unexplored.
The work ability of prison workers remains unexamined in prior research.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate work ability and its associated factors among prison workers.
To understand the relationship between work experience, psychosocial hazards, and work ability in a correctional setting.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study conducted in two Spanish prisons.
Anonymous questionnaires administered to measure Work Ability Index (WAI), psychosocial hazards (COPSOQ), and other variables.
Random sampling of 441 prison workers.

Main Results:

Older and more experienced workers, and those in larger prisons, had lower WAI scores.
Psychosocial factors (high demands, low control, stress) significantly correlated with lower WAI.
Work experience, not age, was the significant predictor of lower WAI after controlling for other variables.

Conclusions:

Work experience confounds the relationship between age and work ability in prison workers.
Interventions should target specific risk groups within the demanding prison environment.
Future research should focus on improving work ability in understudied correctional settings.
