Summary

Plasma endothelin levels were elevated in many patients with essential hypertension, particularly those with severe disease or kidney involvement. These findings suggest endothelin

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Science
  • Nephrology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor involved in vascular tonus regulation.
  • Increased endothelin production or release is hypothesized to contribute to hypertension pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma endothelin concentrations in patients with essential hypertension.
  • To assess the relationship between endothelin levels and hypertension severity or renal function.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma immunoreactive endothelin concentrations were measured using radioimmunoassay and HPLC.
  • Study included 42 essential hypertensive patients, 12 borderline hypertensive patients, and 25 normotensive controls.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Plasma endothelin concentrations were significantly higher in hypertensive patients compared to borderline hypertensive and normotensive subjects.
  • Elevated endothelin levels were observed in hypertensive patients with reduced glomerular filtration rates or increased serum creatinine.
  • Mean blood pressure and serum creatinine correlated with plasma endothelin, while glomerular filtration rate showed a negative correlation.

Conclusions:

  • Plasma endothelin is elevated in a significant proportion of hypertensive patients, especially those with severe hypertension or renal impairment.
  • The primary circulating forms of endothelin in plasma are endothelin-1 and big endothelin.
