Background:

Assessing and discussing a dog's quality-of-life (QoL) is crucial for informed veterinary decision-making.
Owner-veterinarian communication can be enhanced to better address animal welfare concerns.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a participatory tool designed to facilitate discussions and decisions regarding dogs' QoL.
To assess the impact of this tool on owner-veterinarian communication during consultations.

Main Methods:

A tool was created for owners to rate various aspects of their dog's QoL.
Two randomized controlled trials were conducted involving owners and veterinary surgeons.
Owners either used the QoL tool before a consultation or had a standard consultation.

Main Results:

A total of 170 consultations were analyzed (91 tool group, 79 control).
Utilizing the QoL tool significantly increased the frequency of discussions in both trials.
An increase in decisions made was observed in the first trial but not the second.

Conclusions:

The participatory QoL tool shows potential for improving veterinary consultation effectiveness.
Practitioner familiarity with the tool appears to be a key factor in maximizing its benefits, particularly for decision-making.
