Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et al. (2014) explored...
Antisocial Personality Disorder01:24

Antisocial Personality Disorder

Antisocial personality disorder is a chronic mental health condition characterized by persistent patterns of disregard for the rights and well-being of others. Individuals with antisocial personality disorder exhibit behaviors that include deceitfulness, impulsivity, irresponsibility, aggression, and a profound lack of empathy. These traits often manifest early in life and persist into adulthood, leading to significant personal, social, and legal consequences.

Personality Disorders: Paranoid and Schizoid

Personality disorders represent enduring cognition, affect, and behavior patterns that significantly deviate from societal norms. These maladaptive traits often lead to difficulties in various domains, including interpersonal relationships, occupational settings, and overall psychological well-being. Paranoid personality disorder and schizoid personality disorder are two distinct conditions marked by odd or eccentric behavior.

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Implicit Personality Theories01:23

Implicit Personality Theories

Implicit personality theory explains how individuals make assumptions about the relationships between personality traits, behaviors, and character types. When people learn that someone possesses a particular trait, they tend to infer the presence of other related characteristics, forming a cohesive impression. This cognitive shortcut plays a crucial role in social interactions and interpersonal judgments.Central Traits and Their InfluenceSolomon Asch's seminal 1946 study highlighted the power...
Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this; it...

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Psychopathology Research

Background:

  • Understanding the interplay between psychopathy, intelligence, and criminal history is crucial for offender profiling.
  • Previous research suggests complex relationships between psychopathic traits and various life outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the differential relationships between psychopathy factors (interpersonal and antisocial), intelligence (IQ), and conviction history (length and number of prior convictions).
  • To explore how psychopathy subtypes relate to cognitive abilities and criminal behavior patterns.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed psychopathy using the Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version (PCL:SV).
  • Measured intelligence using the CFT 20-R.
  • Analyzed correlations between psychopathy factors, IQ, length of conviction, and number of prior convictions.

Main Results:

  • Interpersonal psychopathy (Factor 1) showed no association with IQ or number of convictions, but a positive link with conviction length.
  • Antisocial psychopathy (Factor 2) was negatively related to IQ and conviction length, and positively to the number of convictions.
  • Individuals high in interpersonal psychopathy were more intelligent than those high in antisocial psychopathy, but less intelligent than those low on both.

Conclusions:

  • Psychopathy subtypes exhibit distinct relationships with intelligence and criminal behavior.
  • Subgrouping offenders based on psychopathy and criminological features is valuable for treatment planning and violence risk assessment.
  • Differentiating offender profiles can inform targeted interventions and improve predictions of future offending.
