Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder01:28

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by recurrent obsessions, compulsions, or both, which consume significant time and interfere with daily functioning. Obsessions involve persistent, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that evoke anxiety. Common examples include irrational fears of contamination or harm. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions. For instance, individuals...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...
Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...

Summary

A new online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program effectively treated obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remotely. Patients showed significant symptom reduction and found the internet-delivered treatment highly acceptable.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition.
  • Traditional treatments may have limited accessibility for some individuals.
  • Internet-administered interventions offer a potential solution for remote OCD treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a novel Internet-administered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol, "The OCD Program," for treating OCD.
  • To assess the acceptability and feasibility of remote CBT delivery for OCD.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-two participants diagnosed with OCD engaged in an 8-week online CBT program.
  • The protocol included 8 online lessons, homework, and regular contact with a clinical psychologist.
  • Primary outcomes measured using the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale and Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised.

Main Results:

  • 81% of participants completed the 8-week program.
  • Significant improvements were observed in OCD symptoms at post-treatment and 3-month follow-up (Cohen's d = 1.28 and 0.60).
  • The treatment was rated as highly acceptable, with minimal therapist contact time.

Conclusions:

  • Internet-administered CBT shows preliminary efficacy in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Remote delivery of CBT for OCD is feasible and acceptable to patients.
  • This digital health approach may enhance access to effective OCD treatment.
