The integrated and random mesh display formats improved the use of automated combat identification (CID) systems. These displays effectively conveyed target identity and system reliability, enhancing user performance.
Area of Science:
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Military Technology
- Cognitive Psychology
Background:
- Automated Combat Identification (CID) systems require user trust, which is enhanced by communicating automation reliability.
- Real-time reliability information can be effectively conveyed through visual displays.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate different visual display formats for an automated combat identification (CID) aid.
- To determine the optimal presentation of target identity and system reliability information.
Main Methods:
- Four visual display formats were developed and tested, manipulating display type (pie, random mesh) and information proximity (integrated, separated).
- Participants engaged targets in a simulated combat environment (Experiment 1) and viewed still scenes (Experiment 2).
Main Results:
- An integrated display format led to more appropriate reliance on automation compared to a separated format.
- The random mesh display showed higher sensitivity than the pie chart display, particularly at lower reliability levels.
Conclusions:
- The integrated display format and the random mesh display were identified as the most effective for conveying CID information.
- Recommendations include using integrated formats and random mesh displays for automated CID systems.

Homogeneity dictates that if an input x(t) is multiplied by a constant c, the output y(t) is multiplied by the same constant. Mathematically, this is expressed as:
