Summary

Robot-assisted surgery for prostate cancer can encounter unexpected instrument failure. Simple maneuvers may allow successful completion, but patients should be informed of potential conversion to traditional surgery.

Observation:

  • A case of RALRP for localized PCa is presented where a crucial hand piece spring disassembled mid-procedure.
  • The disassembled spring could not be reassembled during the surgery.

Findings:

  • The robotic radical prostatectomy was successfully completed despite the instrument malfunction.
  • Surgeons utilized manual dexterity to compensate for the loss of spring function, enabling tissue and needle manipulation.

Implications:

  • While rare, robotic system malfunctions can occur during RALRP.
