Tooth Anatomy

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Background:

Morphological variations in teeth can present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in dentistry.
Furcation involvement typically occurs in molars, rarely in canines, complicating treatment planning.

Observation:

A 39-year-old male presented with severe pain and localized swelling near the mandibular left canine.
Radiographic findings revealed a two-rooted mandibular canine with significant vertical bone resorption on the mesial surface.
Clinical and radiographic evidence led to a diagnosis of a periodontal abscess with a furcation lesion in an atypical location.

Findings:

The rare furcation lesion in the mandibular canine was treated with conventional periodontal therapy, including debridement, irrigation with polyvinylpyrrolidone, antibiotics, surgical access, and scaling and root planing.
Successful management of the periodontal abscess and furcation lesion was achieved.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of recognizing rare dental anomalies for accurate diagnosis.
Timely and appropriate treatment planning, even for unusual presentations like canine furcation lesions, is crucial for optimal patient outcomes.
Awareness of atypical furcation involvement can improve the management of complex periodontal cases.
