Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if a pre-shift fluid bolus impacts firefighter hydration, core temperature, heart rate, and activity levels during wildfire suppression.
  • To compare the effects of a 500 ml pre-shift water bolus versus ad libitum (AD) fluid intake.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-two firefighters were split into two groups: AD (no pre-shift bolus) and PS (500 ml pre-shift water).
  • Hydration status was assessed using urine color, specific gravity, and plasma osmolality (P(osm)).
  • Core temperature, heart rate, and activity levels were monitored throughout the shift.

Main Results:

  • Firefighters commenced work hypohydrated, confirmed by urinary markers and P(osm).
  • Post-shift, firefighters were euhydrated by P(osm) but hypohydrated by urinary markers.
  • No significant differences were found between groups in hydration status, fluid intake, activity, heart rate, or core temperature.

Conclusions:

  • A pre-shift fluid bolus offered no discernible advantage over ad libitum drinking for firefighters.
  • Both hydration strategies resulted in similar fluid consumption and physiological responses during mild weather conditions.
  • Ad libitum fluid intake was sufficient for rehydration after the firefighting shift.
