Background:

  • Canine ocular onchocerciasis, caused by Onchocerca lupi, is an emerging pathogen in dogs in Europe and North America.
  • Feline ocular onchocerciasis has not been previously documented.

Observation:

  • Two domestic short hair cats in the United States presented with clinical signs of ocular disease.
  • The cats exhibited symptoms consistent with episcleritis and orbital cellulitis.

Findings:

  • Clinical, histopathologic, and molecular diagnostic methods were employed.
  • Onchocerca lupi was identified as the causative agent in both feline cases.
  • This marks the first documented instance of O. lupi infection in domestic cats.

Implications:

  • Onchocerca lupi is a newly recognized cause of ocular disease in domestic cats.
  • Veterinarians should consider feline ocular onchocerciasis in the differential diagnosis for cats presenting with relevant clinical signs.
  • This finding expands the known host range for O. lupi and highlights the need for increased awareness in veterinary diagnostics.
