To standardize and validate the Family Interaction Patterns Scale (FIPS).

The FIPS, comprising 106 items across six family functioning domains, was administered to neurotic depressives, hysterical neurotics, alcoholics, and normal individuals, along with a family member.
Statistical analysis compared mean scores across groups and between patients and family members.

Significant differences were found in FIPS mean scores between patient groups (depressives, hysterics, alcoholics) and the normal population.
The scale demonstrated the capacity to discriminate between neurotics, alcoholics, and normals.
