Summary

Percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) is a viable option for Dupuytren's disease, especially for patients unsuitable for surgery. This technique can also delay or avoid operations in younger individuals with distinct cords causing finger contractures.

Area of Science:

  • Hand surgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Musculoskeletal disorders

Background:

  • Dupuytren's disease involves progressive thickening of the fascia in the palm, leading to finger contractures.
  • The efficacy and indications for percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) remain subjects of ongoing discussion within the medical community.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the role and application of percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) in managing Dupuytren's disease.
  • To present the technique and share personal experiences with PNF.
  • To provide recommendations for patient selection for PNF.

Main Methods:

  • The study involves a review of the literature on PNF for Dupuytren's disease.
  • Personal clinical experience and technique of PNF are presented.

Main Results:

  • PNF is recommended for patients with Dupuytren's disease who are not candidates for traditional surgery due to health reasons.
  • PNF is also beneficial for younger patients with clearly defined cords causing metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint flexion contractures, potentially delaying or preventing surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) offers a valuable minimally invasive treatment option for specific patient groups with Dupuytren's disease.
  • PNF can be an effective alternative for patients with contraindications to surgery and for younger individuals seeking to manage early-stage contractures.
