Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the current efficiency, automation, and workflow in national pathology laboratories.
  • To define criteria for improving laboratory practices and productivity.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was distributed to 302 pathology laboratories, collecting data on efficiency, workload, methods, devices, and physical conditions.
  • Workflow productivity was calculated, and laboratories were categorized by training, privacy, and annual biopsy volume.
  • Statistical analysis included distribution criteria and significance of difference between means tests using SPSS 16.0.

Main Results:

  • Annual biopsy numbers were higher in educational units but below productivity limits across all labs.
  • Automation correlated with biopsy numbers, but smaller labs showed redundant automation.
  • Histochemical and immunohistochemical staining were frequent; liquid-based cytology was more common in private hospitals.
  • Archiving times lacked standardization, and service hospitals faced space shortages.
  • Workflow productivity was borderline in educational units and low elsewhere.

Conclusions:

  • Pathology laboratories nationwide must define and enhance their productivity levels.
  • Standardizing archiving procedures is essential for mitigating future malpractice risks.
