Summary

Ageratum conyzoides L. yielded a new chromene and known compounds. Four compounds showed significant inhibitory activity against the P-388 cancer cell line, with some also affecting the HT-29 cell line.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize chemical compounds from the ethanol extract of Ageratum conyzoides L.
  • To evaluate the cytotoxic activity of isolated compounds against cancer cell lines.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction and isolation of compounds using various chromatographic techniques.
  • Structural elucidation of compounds using Mass Spectrometry (MS), Infrared (IR), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy (1D and 2D).

  • One new chromene, 2,2-dimethylchromene 7-methoxy-6-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, was isolated.

  • Four compounds (7,3',5'-Tri-O-methyltricetin, precocene II, 3,5,7,4'-tetrahydroxyflavone, and 5,6,7,3',4',5'-hexamethoxyflavone) exhibited significant inhibitory activity against the P-388 cancer cell line (IC50 values ranging from 3.5 to 24.8 microM).
  • Precocene II also showed inhibitory activity against the HT-29 cancer cell line (IC50 = 61 microM).

Conclusions:

  • Ageratum conyzoides L. is a source of diverse chemical compounds, including novel chromenes.
  • Several isolated flavonoids possess significant cytotoxic potential against cancer cell lines, warranting further investigation for therapeutic applications.
