Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) can reduce lesion leakage and improve or maintain visual acuity. This treatment shows potential for managing PCV effectively.

Background:

  • Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a significant cause of vision loss.
  • Accurate diagnosis of PCV relies on fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and optic coherence tomography (OCT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in patients diagnosed with PCV.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven patients with PCV underwent PDT.
  • Comprehensive assessments including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photography, FFA, and ICGA were performed before and after treatment.
  • Patient follow-up ranged from 6 to 30 months.

Main Results:

  • One month post-PDT, BCVA showed improvement in 5 eyes and decrease in 3 eyes; leakage reduced in 6 eyes.
  • At final follow-up, BCVA was stable or improved in 9 eyes, with reduced or absent leakage in 9 eyes.
  • One case of vitreous hemorrhage occurred, with no other severe adverse effects reported.

Conclusions:

  • PDT demonstrates potential in controlling PCV by reducing vascular leakage.
  • The therapy can facilitate the resolution of hemorrhage, edema, and exudates.
  • PDT may stabilize or enhance visual acuity, presenting a viable treatment option for PCV.
