Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Laser Physics
  • Semiconductor Devices

Background:

  • Grating feedback diode lasers are crucial for tunable laser applications.
  • Controlling phase shift and mode hopping is essential for stable laser operation.
  • Existing designs often require complex adjustments and are prone to instability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a general analytical form for the round trip phase shift in grating feedback diode lasers.
  • To introduce the quasi-synchronous tuning (QST) condition for mode hopping free operation.
  • To simplify the design and enhance the stability of external cavity diode lasers.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a general analytical expression for round trip phase shift.
  • Analysis of the phase shift's dependence on the rotation angle.

  • Identification of the quasi-synchronous tuning (QST) condition.
  • Main Results:

    • The round trip phase shift can be made independent of the rotation angle under the QST condition.
    • A significantly large mode hopping free tuning range is achievable within the QST region.
    • A single-freedom adjustment structure is sufficient to locate the quasi-synchronous pivot.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed analytical form simplifies the understanding and control of phase shifts in grating feedback diode lasers.
    • The QST condition facilitates easier design and more reliable, stable external cavity diode lasers.
    • This approach offers a pathway to more robust and user-friendly tunable laser systems.
