Insights
This study found that an Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) intervention improved information and motivation in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients, positively impacting adherence. Further research is needed to enhance behavioral skills for better patient outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Surgery
- Health Psychology
- Behavioral Medicine
Background:
- Adherence to medical advice is crucial for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients.
- Low adherence rates in CABG patients necessitate effective interventions.
- Few studies have explored adherence-enhancing interventions for cardiac patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of an Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model-based intervention on its core constructs in CABG patients.
- To evaluate the relationship between information, motivation, behavioral skills, and adherence in CABG patients.
Main Methods:
- 152 CABG patients were randomized into an intervention or control group.
- Pretest and 1-month post-intervention assessments were conducted.
- The study evaluated the effects of the IMB intervention on patient information, motivation, and behavioral skills.
Main Results:
- The IMB intervention significantly improved patients' information and motivation levels.
- No significant effect was observed on patients' behavioral skills.
- Information, motivation, and behavioral skills were all significantly associated with patient adherence.
Conclusions:
- The IMB intervention shows initial promise for improving adherence in CABG patients by enhancing information and motivation.
- The study underscores the importance of information, motivation, and behavioral skills in patient adherence.
- Additional factors influencing behavioral skills require identification for more effective interventions.
Background:
In order to benefit from a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, patients must adhere to medical recommendations and health advices. Despite the importance of adherence in CABG patients, adherence rates are disappointingly low. Despite the low adherence rates, very few articles regarding adherence-enhancing intervention among heart patients have been published.
Purpose:
The goal of this study was to assess the effects of the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model-based intervention on the IMB model constructs among patients undergoing CABG and to evaluate the relationship of information, motivation, and behavioral skills with adherence.
Method:
A total of 152 CABG patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention group or to a standard care control group. Participants completed pretest measures and were reassessed 1 month later.
Results:
Findings showed mixed support for the effectiveness of the intervention. There was a significant effect of IMB intervention on information and motivation of patients, but no significant effect on behavioral skills. Furthermore, the results revealed that intervention constructs (information, motivation, and behavioral skills) were significantly related to patients' adherence.
Conclusions:
Findings provided initial evidence for the effectiveness of IMB-based interventions on the IMB constructs and supported the importance of these constructs to improve adherence; however, there are additional factors that need to be identified in order to improve behavioral skills more effectively.
