Background:

  • Tool use is known to modify an individual's peripersonal space (PPS), the sensory-motor space surrounding the body.
  • The impact of observing manipulable objects on PPS has not been extensively studied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether observing pictures of manipulable objects can lead to a remapping of peripersonal space.
  • To explore the role of object manipulability in cross-modal integration within PPS.

Main Methods:

  • Participants reported the location of vibrotactile stimuli on their right hand while ignoring visual distractors.
  • Visual distractors were superimposed on images of objects varying in manipulability (high, medium, low).
  • Cross-modal congruency effect (CCE) was measured by comparing reaction times when stimuli locations matched or mismatched.

Main Results:

  • A significant CCE was observed for high and medium manipulability objects, indicating enhanced cross-modal integration in PPS.
  • No significant CCE was found for low manipulability objects.
  • These results were consistent regardless of whether participants attended to the object's action or visual properties.

Conclusions:

  • Observing manipulable objects, even in static images, can facilitate cross-modal integration within peripersonal space.
  • The degree of object manipulability influences the extent of this peripersonal space remapping and sensory integration.
