Intraoperative sonography provides valuable insights during surgery for liver disease, pancreatic issues, and hyperparathyroidism. This technique enhanced surgical decision-making in a significant number of patients.

Area of Science:

  • Medical imaging
  • Surgical diagnostics
  • Gastrointestinal and endocrine surgery

Context:

  • Intraoperative sonography (IOS) adoption at our institution in November 1987.
  • Experience gained from examining 55 patients over time.
  • Application across diverse surgical conditions including liver disease, pancreatic pathology, and hyperparathyroidism.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the utility and effectiveness of intraoperative sonography in various surgical scenarios.
  • To assess the diagnostic yield of IOS for specific organs and conditions.
  • To determine the sensitivity and specificity of IOS for hyperparathyroidism.

Summary:

  • IOS was applied to 55 patients: 27 with liver disease, 16 with pancreatic problems, and 11 with hyperparathyroidism.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The technique provided additional diagnostic information in approximately one-third of liver disease cases.
  • For hyperparathyroidism, IOS demonstrated a sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 72%.
  • Impact:

    • IOS offers valuable supplementary data during surgical procedures.
    • The findings support the integration of IOS into surgical practice for improved patient management.
    • IOS can aid in the accurate diagnosis and localization of pathologies, particularly in hyperparathyroidism.
