The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Mandibular retrognathism, a common cause of dentofacial anomalies, can be effectively treated using a retrocondylar cartilaginous graft. This surgical advancement technique preserves temporo-mandibular joint function and offers a viable alternative to other jaw lengthening procedures.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Orthodontics
    • Anatomy

    Background:

    • Dentofacial anomalies frequently stem from mandibular retrognathism.
    • Surgical correction often involves mandibular lengthening via sagittal split osteotomy.
    • Key alternatives include mandibular distraction and retrocondylar cartilaginous grafting.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight the retrocondylar cartilaginous graft as a primary treatment for mandibular retrognathism.
    • To emphasize the anatomical and physiological rationale behind this technique.
    • To promote its wider adoption due to efficacy and temporo-mandibular joint preservation.

    Main Methods:

    • The retrocondylar cartilaginous graft technique, introduced by Leon Dufourmentel in 1929.
    • Placement of the graft in the pretympanal, extra-articular space between the tympanal bone and retrocondylar venous plexus.
    • Achieving permanent mandibular advancement.

    Main Results:

    • The retrocondylar cartilaginous graft provides permanent mandibular advancement.
    • The procedure is anatomically and physiologically sound.
    • It effectively treats mandibular retrognathism while respecting the temporo-mandibular joint.

    Conclusions:

    • The retrocondylar cartilaginous graft is a highly effective method for treating mandibular retrognathism.
    • This technique should be considered the preferred approach, particularly when obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is also present.
    • Further recognition and application of this method are warranted.
