Peripheral nerve injuries, like accessory and suprascapular nerve damage, can cause neck and shoulder pain after cosmetic surgery. Early physiotherapy intervention led to full recovery in this case.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Physical Therapy
- Plastic Surgery
Background:
- Neck and shoulder pain is common, but peripheral nerve injuries are often overlooked.
- Cervicofacial lift surgery, while elective, carries a risk of iatrogenic nerve damage.
Observation:
- A patient presented with neck-shoulder pain and disability post-cervicofacial lift.
- Initial diagnosis was a multi-level cervical disorder, but physical examination suggested nerve injury.
Findings:
- Diagnostic signs pointed to accessory and suprascapular nerve injury as the cause of shoulder impairment.
- Physiotherapy, including electrical stimulation and strengthening, resulted in complete recovery.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of considering peripheral nerve injury in post-operative neck/shoulder pain.
- Raises clinician awareness of potential nerve damage risks associated with cervicofacial lift procedures.
