Summary

This study found that a movement-based therapy program, including yoga and dance, effectively improved behavioral issues and core autism features in children. The therapy showed particular benefits for latency-age children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Background:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents significant behavioral challenges.
  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches are increasingly explored for ASD management.
  • Movement-based therapies offer a novel avenue for intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel movement-based CAM approach for children with ASD.
  • To objectively assess the therapeutic effects of this intervention.
  • To evaluate changes in behavioral problems and core autism features.

Main Methods:

  • A within-subject analysis was conducted comparing pre- and post-treatment scores.
  • Participants included 24 children aged 3-16 years diagnosed with ASD.
  • An 8-week multimodal program incorporating yoga, dance, and music therapy based on the relaxation response (RR) was implemented.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed on the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), especially in children aged 5-12 years.
  • The Atypicality scale of the BASC-2, measuring core autism features, showed a statistically significant change (p=0.003).
  • The Aberrant Behavioral Checklist (ABC) was also used for outcome measurement.

Conclusions:

  • A movement-based, modified relaxation response (RR) program utilizing yoga and dance demonstrated efficacy.
  • The therapy was effective in treating behavioral symptoms and core features of autism in children.
  • Latency-age children appeared to benefit most from this intervention.
