Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between anger traits, anger expression, and depressive disorders in elderly patients.
  • To compare anger levels in elderly patients with depression against a control group of healthy elderly individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the State and Trait Anger Inventory (STAXI), Aggression Questionnaire (AQ), and Reaction Inventory (RI) for assessment.
  • Included 216 elderly patients diagnosed with depression and 198 healthy elderly controls.

Main Results:

  • Elderly patients with depression exhibited lower trait anger and anger expression (STAXI), reduced verbal aggression and hostility (AQ), and fewer anger reactions to specific triggers (RI) compared to controls.
  • Within the depression group, increased symptom severity correlated positively with trait anger, state anger, anger expression (STAXI), aggression, and hostility (AQ), and anger reactions (RI), but negatively with anger control (STAXI).
  • Logistic regression indicated higher state anger (STAXI), anger (AQ), and anger reactions (RI) were associated with an increased likelihood of depression.

Conclusions:

  • Elderly individuals with depressive disorders tend to display fewer anger traits and less outward anger expression than their non-depressed counterparts.
  • However, a paradoxical finding emerged: greater depressive symptom severity in this group was linked to heightened reported anger experiences and expression.
