This study introduces a new method to fix geometric distortions in diffusion weighted images (DWI) from echo planar imaging (EPI). The approach improves the consistency of brain imaging analysis, particularly for fiber tractography.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Neuroimaging
  • Image Processing

Background:

  • Geometric distortions in diffusion weighted images (DWI) acquired with echo planar imaging (EPI) pose challenges for accurate neuroimaging analysis.
  • Existing correction methods may struggle with convergence or distort critical anatomical regions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel, robust method for correcting EPI-induced geometric distortions in DWI.
  • To enhance the accuracy and consistency of quantitative imaging metrics and tractography derived from corrected DWI data.

Main Methods:

  • A deformable registration framework utilizing B-spline transformations with non-uniform control point distributions.
  • Estimation of spatial distortions via B(0) fieldmap calculation using structural images and susceptibility models.

  • Adaptive sampling of B-spline control points based on predicted distortion magnitudes.
  • Main Results:

    • The proposed method effectively corrects geometric distortions in DWI data.
    • Improved coherency and consistency were observed in tensor-derived scalar maps and fiber tracts compared to traditional registration methods.
    • The approach avoids local optima convergence and preserves anatomically salient locations.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel EPI distortion correction method offers superior accuracy and reliability for DWI analysis.
    • This technique enhances the consistency of neuroimaging results across different acquisition parameters.
    • The findings have significant implications for advanced neuroimaging research and clinical applications.
