Abstract:
Radiation has been widely used to provide great benefits to our lives, but it has also been known to have negative effects depending on its use. Therefore, in order to use radiation safely and reliably, it is important to take into account the balance between its risks and benefits. Health effects of radiation can be classified from the standpoint of clinical symptoms and from the standpoint of radiation protection. The current scientific evidence is that problematic health effects will only arise if an individual is exposed to more than 100 mSv of radiation. The possible long-term effects resulting from a dose lower than 100 mSv still remains an unresolved issue. Recently, radiation therapy techniques have been in rapid progress, increasing the number of cancer survivors, and data on dose-effect relationships have been obtained for various tumor sites.
