Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a challenging cancer with a poor prognosis.
  • Raltitrexed is a targeted cytotoxic agent inhibiting thymidylate synthase.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of raltitrexed in combination with cisplatin for MPM treatment.
  • To assess the cost-effectiveness of this combination therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Phase III randomized controlled trial comparing raltitrexed plus cisplatin versus cisplatin alone.
  • Health-related quality of life and cost-effectiveness analyses were conducted.

Main Results:

  • The combination of raltitrexed and cisplatin significantly improved overall survival in MPM patients compared to cisplatin alone.
  • No detrimental effect on health-related quality of life was observed.
  • Raltitrexed plus cisplatin was found to be cost-effective.

Conclusions:

  • Raltitrexed in combination with cisplatin is a superior and cost-effective treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma.
  • This combination represents a valuable addition to the therapeutic options for MPM, improving patient outcomes without compromising quality of life.
