Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Ozone therapy is explored for various medical applications.
  • Understanding the safety profile of ozone injections near peripheral nerves is crucial for potential therapeutic uses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of varying ozone concentrations on rat sciatic nerve structure and function.
  • To determine the safety of peripheral nerve ozone injections.

Main Methods:

  • Wistar rats received sciatic nerve injections of ozone (10-80 μg/ml) or oxygen.
  • Sciatic nerve function index (SFI), nerve conduction velocity, latency, and amplitude were assessed.
  • Histopathological analysis and wet weight measurements were performed.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in SFI, nerve conduction velocity, latency, or amplitude were observed across groups.
  • No pathological abnormalities were found in the sciatic nerves post-injection.
  • No serious behavioral abnormalities were noted in any animal group.

Conclusions:

  • Ozone injections at concentrations of 10-80 μg/ml around the rat sciatic nerve do not induce significant damage.
  • The findings support the safety of using ozone injections in the vicinity of peripheral nerves.
