Background:

  • Lumbar disc herniation is a common cause of low back pain.
  • Prosthetic disc nucleus (PDN) replacement is a surgical option for treating lumbar disc herniation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of prosthetic disc nucleus replacement in patients with lumbar disc herniation.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-two patients with lumbar disc herniation underwent PDN implantation.
  • Eighty-one percent of patients completed over 48 months of follow-up.
  • Clinical, functional, and radiographic assessments were performed, including MRI/CT scans.

Main Results:

  • Significant pain relief and functional improvements were observed post-implantation.
  • Patients showed enhanced lumbar mobility and neurological function.
  • However, intervertebral disc height decreased by 18%, and complications like implant dislocation and subsidence occurred.

Conclusions:

  • PDN replacement can effectively increase lumbar motion and improve outcomes for lumbar disc herniation.
  • Long-term follow-up revealed complications and a decrease in disc height, necessitating further investigation.
