Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Salvage ankle arthrodesis is a viable option after failed total ankle replacement. This article provides a treatment algorithm for this technically demanding procedure, addressing bone loss and soft tissue challenges.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Context:

  • Current total ankle replacements have limited longevity.
  • Failed ankle arthroplasty necessitates revision strategies.

Purpose:

  • To present a treatment algorithm for salvage ankle arthrodesis following total ankle replacement failure.
  • To address the technical challenges associated with massive bone loss and soft tissue compromise.

Summary:

  • Salvage ankle arthrodesis is a crucial option after total ankle replacement failure.
  • The procedure is technically demanding due to bone and soft tissue issues.
  • A treatment algorithm is proposed to guide surgical management and preserve function.

Impact:

  • Aims to improve outcomes for patients undergoing revision ankle surgery.
