Aggression

Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for hire...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Criminology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Limited research exists on women perpetrating intimate partner violence (IPV).
  • Understanding the characteristics and motivations behind female IPV is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate correlations between young women's abusive behavior towards partners and relationship characteristics.
  • To examine the relationship between female IPV and general aggressiveness.
  • To test the hypothesis that self-defense is a primary motivator for female IPV.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from a nationwide longitudinal study of the general population.
  • Collected data on intimate partner violence (IPV) from women aged 20-25.

Main Results:

  • 9% of women slapped their partner, and 6% hit, kicked, or bit them.
  • Women perpetrating IPV showed correlations with other destructive interactions and aggression-related traits.
  • Self-defense was not supported as the main motivation for women's IPV.

Conclusions:

  • Young women engaging in IPV tend to be more aggressive than the general female population.
  • These women are often the sole physical aggressors in the relationship.
  • Findings suggest IPV in young women is linked to personality traits and past behavior, not primarily self-defense.
