Background:

Societal and professional demands necessitate veterinarians with integrated competencies.
Current veterinary curricula require innovation to meet evolving practice needs.
A lack of comprehensive competency frameworks hinders curriculum development.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate an integrative competency framework for veterinary professionals.
To guide innovation in veterinary medical education and curriculum design.

Main Methods:

A qualitative multi-method study was employed.
Focus group interviews with 54 recent graduates and clients were analyzed.
A Delphi procedure with 29 veterinary experts validated the framework.

Main Results:

An integrated competency framework, the Veterinary Professional (VetPro) framework, was developed.
The framework comprises 16 competencies organized into seven domains: veterinary expertise, communication, collaboration, entrepreneurship, health and welfare, scholarship, and personal development.

Conclusions:

The VetPro framework offers an empirical basis for veterinary curriculum development.
Integrating the seven domains into training is crucial for preparing veterinarians for contemporary practice.
