Background:

  • Cerebral aneurysms are a significant cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  • The underlying mechanisms of aneurysm formation and rupture are not fully understood.
  • Inflammation is implicated in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of endothelial-leukocyte adhesion molecule (E-selectin, CD62E) in cerebral aneurysm walls.
  • To determine the relationship between E-selectin expression and cerebral aneurysm rupture.

Main Methods:

  • Tissue samples from cerebral aneurysms (n=9) and superficial temporal arteries (STA, n=5) were analyzed.
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect and localize E-selectin.
  • Western blot analysis quantified E-selectin protein levels.

Main Results:

  • E-selectin was detected in all cerebral aneurysm tissue samples.
  • E-selectin expression was significantly higher in aneurysm tissues compared to normal STA.
  • IHC revealed E-selectin concentrated in proliferating, disorganized epithelial cells within aneurysms.

Conclusions:

  • E-selectin may play a crucial role in cerebral aneurysm development and rupture.
  • E-selectin likely contributes by promoting inflammation and compromising cerebral artery wall integrity.
