We developed a modular programmatic application interface (MAPI) to simplify integrating diverse bioinformatics web services. MAPI enables unified representation and management of web service metadata, facilitating easier software client development.
Area of Science:
- Bioinformatics
- Computational Biology
- Web Services
Background:
- Bioinformatics resources are diverse but fragmented, complicating integrated data analysis.
- The heterogeneity of bioinformatics tools hinders efficient exploitation of computational capacity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a modular programmatic application interface (MAPI) for simplifying the development of software clients.
- To enable integrated use of diverse bioinformatics web services through a unified framework.
Main Methods:
- Developed a modular programmatic application interface (MAPI).
- MAPI provides functionality for uniform representation, management, and invocation of Web Services metadata.
- The framework supports modular organization, allowing clients to install only necessary components.
Main Results:
- MAPI facilitates the construction of software clients for integrated bioinformatics data processing.
- The modular design allows for extension of functionality without rewriting clients.
- Demonstrated utility through implementation of clients for service discovery and invocation.
Conclusions:
- MAPI offers a versatile solution for unifying disparate bioinformatics web services.
- The framework supports advanced features like workflow composition and asynchronous calls.
- Successfully integrated various web services, including GRID-based, SOAP, BioMOBY, and R-bioconductor.
