Insights
Children with high behavioral inhibition system (BIS) showed significant stress reduction in a mind-body program. This pilot study suggests benefits for children with high BIS, regardless of their behavioral activation system.
Area of Science:
- Child Psychology
- Mind-Body Interventions
- Stress Management
Background:
- Preventive intervention programs are crucial for child well-being.
- Understanding the interplay between behavioral systems and stress is essential for targeted interventions.
- Mind-body practices offer potential avenues for stress reduction in children.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate a mind-body preventive intervention for children.
- To explore the relationship between children's behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and behavioral activation system, stress, and stress reduction.
- To assess the efficacy of the intervention in reducing stress levels.
Main Methods:
- Pilot study with an intervention group (n=30) and a control group (n=24).
- Weekly sessions included yoga, visualization, social exercises, and breathing techniques.
- Questionnaires and stress level reports were collected pre- and post-intervention and after each session.
Main Results:
- Stress reduction was observed exclusively in the intervention group.
- Children with a high behavioral inhibition system (BIS) demonstrated the most significant stress reduction.
- The benefits for high BIS children were independent of their behavioral activation system levels.
Conclusions:
- Mind-body stress reduction programs may be particularly beneficial for children with high BIS.
- This pilot study provides preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of the intervention in specific child populations.
- Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and explore underlying mechanisms.
Purpose Of Study:
The aim of this pilot study was to examine a mind-body-based preventive intervention program and to determine relationships between children's behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and behavioral activation system, stress, and stress reduction after the program.
Design Of Study:
Children participated in the program (n=30) or in a control condition (n=24). They filled out questionnaires before and after the program and reported their levels of stress before and after each of the five sessions.
Method:
The program consisted of weekly sessions. Each session incorporated yoga postures, visualization, and social exercises. Breathing techniques were integrated.
Findings:
Stress reductions were only seen in the intervention group and mainly in children with high BIS--irrespective of their behavioral activation system.
Conclusion:
The results demonstrate that children with high BIS may benefit from a mind-body-based stress reduction program.

The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response. Research shows that adults who exercise regularly have nearly half the risk...
