Summary

This case study highlights a rare fungal keratitis (keratomycosis) in a patient post-pterygium surgery. Prompt treatment with amphotericin B led to a favorable outcome, emphasizing awareness of fungal infections after eye procedures.

  • Pterygium excision is a common ophthalmic surgery.
  • Infectious complications post-pterygium surgery are rare, typically bacterial.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old patient developed a corneal abscess one month after pterygium surgery.
  • Clinical examination revealed features suggestive of fungal keratitis, confirmed by direct microscopy.

Findings:

  • A rare case of keratomycosis caused by Fusarium dimerum was diagnosed.
  • Successful treatment was achieved with topical amphotericin B (0.25%).

Implications:

  • This is the first reported case of keratomycosis due to F. dimerum following pterygium excision without adjuvant therapy.
  • Ophthalmologists should consider fungal infections as a potential complication of pterygium surgery.
