Sputum color, especially green or yellow, strongly predicts bacteria in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB). However, it doesn't always indicate the need for antibiotics.

- Sputum color, particularly green and yellow, is a strong indicator of potentially pathogenic bacteria in AECB.
- While indicative, sputum color alone does not definitively determine the necessity of antibiotic treatment in all AECB cases.
