Summary

Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) have a significantly higher likelihood of having a prior diagnosis of open-angle glaucoma (OAG). This population-based study highlights a novel association between ED and OAG.

Background:

Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is linked to systemic metabolic and cardiovascular issues.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) shares common risk factors with these disorders.
The association between ED and OAG remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between ED and prior OAG.
Utilized nationwide, population-based data from Taiwan.
Employed a retrospective case-control cohort design.

Main Methods:

Conducted an age-matched case-control study.
Identified 4605 patients with ED (cases) and 23,025 controls.
Used conditional logistic regression, adjusting for comorbidities and lifestyle factors.
Defined OAG by ICD code and topical antiglaucoma medication prescription.

Main Results:

Prior OAG was diagnosed in 1.1% of ED cases versus 0.4% of controls.
Patients with ED were 2.85 times more likely to have prior OAG (95% CI, 2.10-4.07).
The association remained significant after adjusting for confounders.

Conclusions:

This study reveals a novel association between ED and prior OAG.
Suggests a potential shared pathophysiology or common risk factors.
Highlights the importance of considering OAG in patients with ED.
