Pituitary metastases are rare but can be the first sign of cancer, leading to dysfunction. Surgical removal of these tumors can significantly improve patient symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Pituitary metastases are uncommon secondary tumors of the pituitary gland.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging, especially when the primary cancer is unknown.

Observation:

  • Three cases of histologically confirmed pituitary metastases over 12 years.
  • In two patients, pituitary metastasis was diagnosed before the primary cancer was identified.
  • Pituitary dysfunction symptoms were the initial presentation in two out of three patients.

Findings:

  • Common symptoms include visual impairment, headaches, pituitary insufficiency, and diabetes insipidus.
  • Sellar masses were consistently detected via CT or MRI.
  • Complete tumor extirpation was achieved through subfrontal or transsphenoidal approaches.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering pituitary metastases in patients with unexplained pituitary dysfunction.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can lead to symptom improvement.
  • Underscores the role of neuroimaging in identifying sellar masses.
