Cloning of Dolly the Sheep01:08

Cloning of Dolly the Sheep

The first successfully cloned mammal was Dolly, a sheep, born on 5th July 1996 at Roslin Institute, Scotland. The cloned sheep was named after the American singer Dolly Parton. Dolly lived for seven years and died of respiratory complications, which is speculated to be due to the actual age of her DNA. Because the DNA in cloned cells belongs to an older individual,  the cloned individual’s life expectancy may be affected. Indeed, analysis of Dolly’s DNA revealed shorter telomeres than other...

    Summary

Human breast milk is the optimal nutrition for infants, offering irreplaceable benefits. Donor milk is crucial for hospitalized newborns when mother's milk is unavailable, especially in Canada where supply is limited.

    Area of Science:

    • Neonatal Nutrition
    • Lactation Biology
    • Pediatric Health

    Background:

    • Human breast milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition, providing essential bioactive components.
    • Advances in infant formulas cannot replicate the unique benefits of human milk.
    • Mother's own milk is not always available for sick or hospitalized newborns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight the importance of human breast milk for infant nutrition.
    • To advocate for the use of pasteurized donor human milk as an alternative feeding.
    • To address the limited supply of donor milk in Canada and its prioritization.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of current scientific literature on infant nutrition.
    • Analysis of the benefits of human milk versus infant formula.

  • Discussion of ethical considerations for donor milk distribution.
  • Main Results:

    • Human breast milk offers unparalleled nutritional and immunological advantages for infants.
    • Pasteurized donor human milk serves as a safe and beneficial alternative when mother's milk is unavailable.
    • There is a critical shortage of donor human milk in Canada.

    Conclusions:

    • Exclusive human milk feeding is ideal for all infants, especially vulnerable neonates.
    • Prioritizing donor human milk for sick, hospitalized newborns in Canada is essential.
    • Addressing the donor milk shortage is crucial to meet the needs of vulnerable infants.
