Post-traumatic stress disorder: an overview of three etiological variables, and psychopharmacologic treatment

Three variables have been found to be important indicators in determining the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): the pre-existing personality, the trauma involved and the individual's environment. The neurological impact of PTSD on the brain's pathways gives credence to psychopharmacologic treatment. Five treatment principles of PTSD are discussed as helpful models for treating this disorder.
