Ketamine gargle effectively prevents postoperative sore throat (POST) following tracheal intubation. This simple intervention significantly reduces the incidence of POST compared to a placebo.
Area of Science:
- Anesthesiology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Tracheal intubation frequently causes airway mucosa trauma.
- This trauma is a primary cause of postoperative sore throat (POST).
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of ketamine gargle versus placebo in preventing POST.
- To assess the impact of ketamine gargle on airway trauma post-intubation.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 40 patients undergoing elective surgery.
- Patients received either a ketamine gargle (50 mg) or a placebo gargle 5 minutes before anesthesia induction.
- Postoperative sore throat was graded using a four-point scale at 4, 8, and 24 hours.
Main Results:
- The incidence of POST was significantly lower in the ketamine gargle group compared to the placebo group.
- POST occurred more frequently in the control group (placebo) at all measured time points (4, 8, and 24 hours).
Conclusions:
- Ketamine gargle is an effective method for reducing the incidence of POST.
- This intervention offers a promising strategy for mitigating airway trauma complications after endotracheal intubation.
