A total of 412 orthopedic Twitter profiles were identified.
176 (50.3%) profiles belonged to surgeons, with most being young and recently board-certified (66% within 10 years).
A small percentage of orthopedic surgeons and practices currently utilize Twitter.

Conclusions:

Current adoption of Twitter by orthopedic surgeons is limited but growing.
Social networking is poised to become a significant communication tool in orthopedic practice.
Future research should explore the impact and best practices of social media in orthopedics.
