Summary

This report details the first canine conjunctival dacryops, a rare cyst affecting the eyelid. Surgical removal proved curative for these golden retrievers, offering a successful treatment for this novel veterinary condition.

A Rabbit Model of Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye Disease Induced by Concanavalin A Injection into the Lacrimal Glands: Application to Drug Efficacy Studies

Background:

  • Conjunctival cysts are uncommon in dogs.
  • Dacryops, a specific type of lacrimal gland cyst, has not been previously reported in canine conjunctiva.

Observation:

  • Two 5-month-old golden retrievers presented with masses on the lower eyelid conjunctiva.
  • Externally located, cystic masses were surgically excised.
  • Fluid analysis revealed proteinaceous material; histology showed cystic walls with glandular tissue and mild inflammation.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed conjunctival dacryops, characterized by single to double cell-layered cysts with cuboidal to flattened cells.
  • Mild submucosal inflammation and adjacent acinar glandular tissue were noted.
  • No microorganisms were detected, ruling out infectious causes.

Implications:

  • This is the first documented case of conjunctival dacryops in dogs.
  • Complete surgical excision is an effective and curative treatment for canine conjunctival dacryops.
  • This finding expands the differential diagnosis for eyelid masses in veterinary ophthalmology.
