Summary

This study determined optimal electrical stunning parameters for Texel sheep, finding 0.33 A effectively stuns 90% of animals. For improved animal welfare, a minimum of 0.5 A (160 V) is recommended before throat cutting within 16 seconds.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Science
  • Animal Welfare
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Electrical stunning is a common method for rendering livestock insensible to pain before slaughter.
  • Optimizing electrical stunning parameters is crucial for ensuring animal welfare and meat quality.
  • Previous research has not definitively established the most effective electrical parameters for sheep stunning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the optimal electrical current and voltage for effective stunning of Texel breed sheep.
  • To evaluate the impact of different electrical parameters on the induction and duration of epileptiform insults.
  • To provide evidence-based recommendations for improving electrical stunning practices in sheep for animal welfare.

Main Methods:

  • Implantation of electrocorticogram (ECoG) electrodes in seventy Texel sheep (approx. 43 kg live weight).
  • Application of various electrical currents and voltages using scissor model tongs for stunning.
  • Statistical analysis to estimate the current strength required for 90% effective stunning and assessment of insult duration.
  • Monitoring for paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia post-stunning.

Main Results:

  • A current strength of 0.33 A was statistically estimated to effectively stun 90% of sheep, inducing immediate epileptiform insults.
  • The duration of epileptiform insults was significantly longer with 600 V compared to 300 V (shortest durations 23 s and 22 s, respectively).
  • Paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia was consistently observed in all sheep after stunning.

Conclusions:

  • Electrical stunning of sheep requires a minimum amperage of 0.5 A (160 V) for effective stunning and induction of epileptiform insults.
  • Throat cutting should be performed within 16 seconds following electrical stunning to ensure animal welfare.
  • These findings provide critical data for refining electrical stunning protocols in sheep production.
