Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Native somatostatin has broad inhibitory actions on the nervous and gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) systems.
  • Its clinical utility is limited by a short duration of action.
  • Sandostatin (octreotide) is a synthetic, long-acting analog overcoming these limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the therapeutic applications of Sandostatin.
  • To highlight its efficacy in treating various tumors and gastrointestinal disorders.
  • To discuss its potential as an adjunctive cancer therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Review of preclinical and clinical studies on Sandostatin (octreotide).
  • Analysis of Sandostatin's effects on hormone secretion, tumor cells, and gastrointestinal functions.
  • Evaluation of its use in specific clinical conditions.

Main Results:

  • Sandostatin is effective in treating GH/TSH-secreting pituitary tumors and GEP endocrine tumors.
  • Preclinical studies demonstrate its antineoplastic activity.
  • Encouraging results are reported for conditions like esophageal variceal bleeding and refractory diarrhea.

Conclusions:

  • Sandostatin represents a significant advance in managing specific endocrine tumors.
  • It holds potential as an adjunctive therapy in cancer treatment.
  • Further applications in various gastrointestinal and related conditions are supported by encouraging data.
