A novel bacterial species, Enterococcus rivorum, was discovered in pristine Finnish brook waters. This Gram-positive bacterium is distinct from other Enterococcus species based on genetic and protein analyses.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Bacteriology
- Environmental Microbiology
Background:
- Enterococcus species are common bacteria found in various environments.
- Characterization of novel Enterococcus strains is crucial for understanding microbial diversity and potential ecological roles.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and characterize novel Enterococcus strains isolated from pristine Finnish brook waters.
- To determine the taxonomic position of these isolates within the Enterococcus genus.
Main Methods:
- Whole-cell protein fingerprinting using one-dimensional SDS-PAGE.
- Sequencing of 16S rRNA, atpA, and pheS genes.
- GTG5-PCR fingerprinting.
- DNA-DNA hybridization.
Main Results:
- Enterococcus strains from Finnish brooks formed a distinct cluster based on protein profiles.
- The isolates exhibited unique biochemical characteristics, including tolerance to bile and tellurite, and variable growth at different temperatures and salt concentrations.
- Genetic analyses (16S rRNA, atpA, pheS sequencing) and DNA-DNA hybridization confirmed the isolates represent a novel species, Enterococcus rivorum sp. nov.
Conclusions:
- Enterococcus rivorum sp. nov. is a newly identified bacterial species found in pristine aquatic environments.
- This species is phylogenetically related to the Enterococcus faecalis group but is genetically and phenotypically distinct.
- The discovery contributes to the understanding of microbial diversity in undisturbed ecosystems.
