Summary

Couples with both partners experiencing mental illness (Group A) showed longer marriages and higher socioeconomic status than those with one ill partner (Group B). Wives were more often the secondary partner to develop mental illness in Group A.

Conclusions:

Shared mental illness within a couple is associated with longer marital duration and higher socioeconomic status.
Gender dynamics appear to play a role in the progression of mental illness within couples.
The duration of illness in the primary partner is a distinguishing factor in couples with mutual mental illness.
